Dragging along

Weekends at home just emotionally drain me sometimes. My boys are not bad kids, they are good...they are just high maintenance. I feel like I never have time to get anything done. I can’t even think straight anymore about what I need to do, or want to do. I’m tired, and I’m cranky. Adam woke up around 2am Fri, Sat, & Sun mornings. We were already exhausted, and I felt physically ill as I got up with Adam. I’ve always been one to feel sick/nauseous if I don’t get enough sleep, ever since I was little. Adam was so tired by about 9:30am, but try as I might, I could not get him to fall asleep. Usually a bottle works like a charm, nope! His crib is in our room (because our house only has 2 bedrooms- ours & Brendan’s), which is a loft, so there’s no door to close or anything, which makes it hard. I tried rocking him, no. I tried another bottle, no. I tried holding him, no. I tried rubbing his back, no. I tried letting him stay up and play, no, too fussy & didn’t want to be put down...but didn’t want to be held either. Ugh!!! Finally, I just put him in his crib and let him cry. Not just cry...scream at the top of his lungs. Since Joe was gone hunting, and I had been up with the kids, I still had not had a shower yet. So, since the shower is right next to our room and I was close by, I took a shower while Adam screamed. I didn’t know what else to do, and thought maybe I’d feel at least a little better after a shower. Finally, he fell asleep.

All day both days of the weekend I spent chasing Adam and trying to meet Brendan’s needs too. Every time I open the refrigerator, Adam is right there trying to climb in. When I shut the door, he cries. Every time I open the dishwasher, here comes Adam, wanting to grab the racks and climb in. When I shut the door, he cries. Every time I open the pantry to get something or throw something away, there’s Adam trying to get in the pantry. When I shut the door, he cries. Then he’s opening all the cabinets, pulling out pots & pans. When I shut the doors, he cries. Then he’s climbing on top of his plastic box. Then he’s pulling out videos, and playing with the stereo/tv/vcr/dvd buttons. Then crash! He’s knocked the top part of the stereo system off and behind the stereo. Then he’s grabbing the cordless phone, chewing on the antenna and pushing buttons (my luck he’s going to dial 911 accidentally one of these times!). Then he’s crawling into the bathroom, wanting to play with the plunger (EWWWW). Take it away, and he cries. Close the door and he cries. I can’t wait any longer to pee, so I run upstairs to use the bathroom as quick as I can, come out, there’s Adam who had crawled all the way up the stairs after me! Yikes! Go downstairs in basement and dig out another baby gate. Put up gate at foot of stairs. Adam immediately gets to work trying to figure out how to climb it. Brendan starts pretending to be a Power Ranger, and keeps kicking the gate. Our house is just laid out really badly for little kids. It’s too open- he can freely go room to room because there aren’t enough walls and doors to close things off. Constantly all day, all weekend went on & on like this. And that’s just Adam...I haven’t even mentioned all the things Brendan wanted/needed taken care of at the same time. Including waking up Adam TWICE. So, when do I do laundry? When do I do dishes? When do I cook? When do I vacuum? When do I pick up papers and stuff that have accumulated? I have a hard time finding time to CLEAN, let alone any time for ME. Is it wrong that I look forward to the work week and dread the weekends?! I need a break. I need sleep. I can’t even think straight.

They say to take care of yourself first, because until you do you can’t take good care of anyone. I totally believe this, heck I’m living proof of it, as I’m just about useless to anyone else right now. But HOW do you take care of your own needs, and WHEN? Joe is tired and worn down too, so we’re not much help to each other either, and can’t easily give each other a break. How do you take time for yourself and meet your own needs without neglecting parental responsibilities? I’m so tired I can’t logically think this through to come up with a solution. I feel like my life is just rushing past and dragging me along behind it.

Dragon Tales Live was great!

Brendan & I really enjoyed our "date night". First I took him to McDonald's and we sat right up at the big fish tank. Then it was on to the Dragon Tales Live show! It was great! Lots of neat backgrounds and lighting. All the little kids in the audience were so cute singing & dancing along too. Brendan thought it was really cool. I bought him a t-shirt and neat flashlight thing at the show. He insisted on wearing his t-shirt all weekend. He's already run out the batteries on the light too. (After getting home, I realized I should have probably gotten Adam a light too, because he was very interested in playing with Brendan's.)

Tastefully Simple, Funeral, and Company coming!

Well, this week is flying by too! I can't believe it's Thursday already. Tonight I'm going to a Tastefully Simple party. I love those. All those yummy samples...mmmmmm...can't wait. Luckily Joe likes their products too, so he won't get upset when I buy some more! lol

Tomorrow I have to take off work for a funeral. My uncle's mother died. No, officially I'm not related to his side of the family, but I definitely knew this woman. Every Thanksgiving since I was little we have gone to my aunt & uncle's house and since they had their other side of the family there too, we grew up with those relatives at Thanksgiving every year too. So, since my mom is insisting that I have to be there, and because I can, I'm going to her funeral. I don't know yet if Joe is going with me or not. He says he will, but really he already had plans to be hunting with his brother. So, I'm not sure.

Speaking of that, we'll have company for the next 5 days! Joe's brother is coming to hunt. He'll arrive tonight and get an early start hunting tomorrow. Then he plans to hunt Sat, Sun and Mon too! So, things will be a little different for the next several days. Not a big deal, I just will have to think of meals & such, and be sure I'm dressed before walking around the house. lol The last 2 years he came several weekends in a row to hunt, but he's never stayed this many days in a row in one stay before. Joe is planning to hunt with him part of the time, but not that entire time. I have plans tonight, & tomorrow night I take Brendan to Dragon Tales Live, so Joe & his brother will be stuck with both boys tonight & Adam tomorrow night. But then I'll be stuck all weekend. lol Okay, I guess I shouldn't say "stuck", I don't mean that I don't want to be w/ the boys! There are several neat fall festivals in the area this weekend, but I don't think I want to attempt that w/ both boys by myself. So, we'll probably just hang out around the house.

In Crableg Heaven!

Well, on a lighter note than my last posting...

Last night Joe & I had our date night. It was Joe's birthday, (and our Anniversary is today). We went to a restaurant called Grindstone Brewery, and boy were we pleasantly surprised to see they had a small buffet set up with crablegs on it! We LOVE crablegs! Even better, the cost was only $5.95 for all-you-can-eat buffet! Holy cow! That is soooooooooo cheap for crablegs!!! We jumped at that. There were also other items such as hot wings, cheese sticks, chili, chips & sauce, and more on the buffet too. They put it out on Monday nights as a Monday Night Football special. We felt like we had won the lottery! LOL I still can't believe that's all they charge for that. We also enjoyed the home-brewed beers they have there.

Tonight for our Anniversary, we actually had already bought some crablegs and had them waiting in the freezer! We didn't know we would have crablegs last night too! lol So, Joe is picking up some steaks and champaigne, and we'll have that with a side of crablegs for dinner tonight! We'll still have the boys there with us of course, but we figured we shouldn't get a babysitter two nights in a row. We also got home too late (and we were too full) to eat Joe's birthday cake last night, so we will have that for dessert tonight. Brendan is really excited about getting to eat Daddy's birthday cake! heehee

Sad news :(

Unfortunately I have received some sad news from my Box Project family (in MS) that I sponsor. She has 2 girls, and back in May she had had a baby boy born prematurely at 24 or 25 weeks. Well, now after 5 months of life, he died on Sept 21. I just got a letter yesterday letting me know.
Awhile ago they took him off the ventilator and put in a trach (sp?), and she (the mom) had gone to a training session at the hospital to learn how to take care of all of his needs, and such, in preparation of him finally coming home, but he had not been released from the hospital just yet. Then he got really sick. She said she had a really overwhelmingly bad feeling for about a week that wouldn't go away. (and this is unusual for her, as she has had a very positive outlook through everything else he's been through so far). She said at first when she had that bad feeling that she prayed and begged for God to spare her child, but when the feeling kept coming back she realized that this was God's way of warning her of what was to come, and so she changed her prayers to asking for whatever was God's will and to "just give me strength to handle it and to be strong for my kids and allow me to accept His will without guilt, anger or regrets". As soon as she came to accept that, she called the hospital and asked to have the minister baptize him, and they did. Then later that very same evening, the hospital called to say that her son had died. So sad.

I feel helpless. There are no words to say that will do any good, I know. I'm sending a sympathy card today anyway though. At least she will know I'm thinking about her & the girls. I had a big box of baby clothes from my boys ready to send her when her baby came home from the hospital. Since she has 2 girls, I knew she didn't have any baby boy clothes. I'm so glad I had not sent it yet, as that would have been hard for her to have to do something with them when he died. I knew he was going to have huge obstacles to overcome in order to make it, but gosh after living for 5 months I thought he was going to make it! She has miscarried a couple/few boys previous to this too. She was so happy to finally have a baby boy that made it to birth, and now she's grieving another loss. *sigh*

Here it is, the end of another month! I'm actually glad it's over, September is my least favorite month. October is my favorite, so I'm happy! We do have a busy weekend and week ahead of us though. We're helping my mom caulk her basement Saturday. Well, okay, JOE is caulking her basement while Mom and I visit and watch the boys.

Then on Sunday I'm going to Croptoberfest! It's a scrapbooking event, 12 hours of scrapping time with no kids! WOOHOO!!! I can't wait.

Next week we have something every night except one. Joe's birthday is Monday and our Anniversary is Tuesday, so we're starting the week out celebrating! Followed by several other things next week...including taking Brendan to see Dragon Tales Live! Just Mommy & Brendan. It's part of his birthday gift (early). I'm looking forward to having him out just the two of us. Sometimes I feel like I can't give him enough attention when Adam is around, so it will be nice to do something just for him.

I hope I can find time to clean the house Saturday night after Mom's. I just have not been able to keep caught up lately.

The weather has been so much nicer this week! Went from 90's last week to 70's this week...I love 70's! The mornings have been chilly, so I've pulled out the boys fall clothes. Adam started wearing little tennis shoes this week. He looks so big in "big boy" shoes! Over the summer we left him barefoot, and we were trying to leave him barefoot until he started walking but the weather cooled off before he started walking. Although he did take his first step a week or so ago. But his tennis shoes are so cute...white with Winnie the Pooh. He's growing so fast. He's started trying to say Brendan's name now. He can't say Brendan but he calls him "nin nin". It's so cute. He loves to crawl into "nin nin's" room and play with the big kid toys instead of his baby toys.

I've also been eating really healthy this week. Hoping to make that a habit. I'm following the menu for Dr. Phil's 14-day fast start. I just needed some ideas of what to eat and not eat and recipe examples of healthy food. I'm not really fat, but I do have a little baby fat left to lose. Mostly I just want to be HEALTHY and look better. I also haven't had any soda this week at all. That just kinda came along naturally without me even trying this time. With all the fruits and veggies I've been eating, I just didn't have any desire for soda anymore. Soda doesn't go well with fruit especially! Too much acid! So I've been drinking water, and when that gets boring I grab a no-calorie flavored water. Still have my sugar-free Red Bull some mornings, but that's not soda. I've lost 2 lbs in the last 4 days. Yea! The dinners have been pretty good too! And I have felt more full than when I wasn't eating as healthy. Eating more, feeling full, and losing weight. Go figure.

Time marches on

Wow, I never cease to be amazed at how fast time flies by! Here we are the last week of September already, and Adam is 11 months old!!! Time to start thinking about his 1st birthday party already. And Brendan will turn 5 two weeks after Adam turns 1. We've decided to do just one party for them both together. That way the family won't have to drive in twice so close together. Brendan is insisting on a Power Rangers birthday party. Yesterday I bought the plates and such...half of the plates are Power Rangers and half of them are Baby Sesame Street 1st Birthday plates. LOL What a combination!

Brendan is also insisting that he wants to be a Power Ranger for Halloween. At first he really wanted the white Power Ranger, but those are kinda hard to find! I showed him a website with all sorts of Power Ranger costumes, and he decided that the black one was cool and that's what he wanted. So, I found it on ebay for a little less, and we're waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Every day he asks me if his costume is here yet.

This past weekend my sister & I got together again to do a 2-family yard sale AGAIN. It is such a pain and hassle every time. We pretty much decided we're not doing those anymore. I'd rather sell stuff on ebay and give stuff away than do yard sales. Then on Sunday we got together with some of the people in the moms group I'm in for a fall picnic. That was kinda fun. All the kids played together on the playground. Brendan enjoyed it. Towards the end, Brendan needed to go potty, so he went into the men's bathroom by the shelter. After a few minutes, Joe went in to check on him, only to find Brendan SITTING on the URINAL, and yes, he had pooped in it. Leave it to MY son to do that! LOL *sigh*

Well, my lunch break is over now, I better end this & get back to work!

Our babysitter is TOO good! LOL

Well, for our date night this past Monday we went to see "Wedding Crashers". It was pretty funny. We decided to keep it short and just do the movie & then go home. Brendan was so excited that Mary was going to be watching him that night. He absolutely LOVES the babysitter. He cries every time she leaves. Brendan cried when she left this time too. Not just a little cry- he was screaming crying and carrying on uncontrollably for about 20 minutes straight! And of course, all that noise woke Adam up too. So, we ended up having to redo all the bedtime stuff and get the boys settled back down and into bed again. So that was not fun. Even the morning after, Brendan was really grouchy and he said "I miss Mary". Really he has been a brat all week ever since she left. I'm so glad we have a great babysitter that he loves, but I'm kinda wishing he liked her a little less so he wouldn't have a meltdown every time she leaves! lol

Brendan also got "written up" at his daycare twice this week so far. First for something I didn't expect...they said that on the playground he pulled down his pants and stuck his bare butt in another kid's face! OMG! On one hand I had to laugh when I read that, but I was also a little embarrassed that *my* kid did that. LOL The other thing he got in trouble for was for copying another kid, and the kid & teacher asked him to stop and he didn't, so they sent him up to the front office, and he yelled at the teacher said she was bad and stuck out his tongue. Ugh!

At home he has stopped doing his regular morning jobs without a fight this week (making his bed, getting dressed, and feeding the cat). When we tell him to do something he just whines and says "I don't know how". It's so frustrating. We hate to yell at him for every little thing, but he just is not doing what we tell him to. We asked nice, we told him nice, we told him sternly, we yelled, we gave spankings, we took away toys, nothing worked. He just whined and yelled that he "didn't know how". Ugh! I tried making a race out of it this morning, told him to see if he could make his bed before I got done putting on my socks & shoes and then said "Ready, Set, GO!" (he loves to try to beat us at things, so I thought that might work). He smiled, like he thought it was funny, but then he said "That's okay, I don't want to beat you right now." LOL So much for that "brilliant" idea.

Sugar-Free Chocolate Candy...Never again!

Note to self: never eat sugar free chocolate candies, no matter how good they look!

Oh my, yesterday I ate 3 pieces of sugar-free chocolate candy at work and it gave me the WORST stomach ache and pains. A while back I got a small stomach ache from sugar-free chocolate candy, but I thought it was just that brand or kind or something, so I tried a different one this time. UGH- how does anyone eat that stuff? I spent most of the evening in pain (and in the bathroom).

Never, never again.

It's Friday again?!

Wow, this week flew by! Can't believe it's Friday again already! I've already forgotten what we did last weekend. lol On Monday (Labor Day) we went to Joe's parent's house to celebrate my MIL's birthday. All Joe's siblings were there too. We had a good time. Some friends of ours were having a get-together for Labor Day, and since they live just a couple minutes away from Joe's parent's house, we went by there afterwards. All our friends there were surprised to see us, since we live about 2 hours away and they didn't know we were in town. We had fun there too. We got home late Monday night, and then back to work on Tuesday morning.

About a month ago, Joe & I decided to set up a regular date night. One night a week is too much, we can't afford a babysitter that often, so we decided to make it once a month- the first Monday of every month. We picked Monday because we hate crowds, so we wanted to avoid the weekends. So, with last Monday being a holiday, we post-poned until the 2nd Monday for September...which is this coming Monday! We're both looking forward to going out without the kids. And our regular babysitter has agreed to always babysit the 1st Monday of each month for us, so we already have her lined up for these. We're going to go see a movie this time, I think. Either Wedding Crashers or The 40-year-old Virgin. We both want something funny.

Things at work have suddenly gotten a little hectic. We have our annual Heritage Festival next weekend, and I'll have to work 11 hour shifts both Sat & Sun that weekend, yuck! Also, one of my co-workers that is a key part of the festival set-up and such, just found out that her grandpa died, and she will be in California all next week, getting back the night before the festival. So, we're trying to fill-in for her as best as we can with all the preparations next week. September is always my least favorite month of the year because of this festival. I'll be glad when it's over.

Oh! Adam has started standing on his own now. He has stood there without holding on to anything about 10 times in the last couple days. We cheer for him every time. A couple times when we started cheering we startled him and he fell. LOL! I haven't gotten a picture of it yet, but hopefully I can have the camera ready when he does it soon.

Other than that, not a lot to write about today.

Friday Rumblings

Joe made it home safely from Nebraska last night. (he's been there all week for work). I felt bad for him...he was anxious to see the boys, and Brendan barely looked up from his movie to say "Hi Daddy" and Adam would not go to him, he wanted Mommy.

While Joe was gone, the electric company came out & talked to me, and pointed out 3 trees that were in the way of the power lines and said they needed to take out the trees. I was surprised that they wouldn't just trim the limbs, but since it was only 3 trees (and we have hundreds of trees on our property) I said okay if they had to. So yesterday I get home from work and wow, it looked different! They cleared way more than just 3 trees! Joe wasn't too happy either. But, we figured it was done, nothing to do about it now. Well, then Joe happened to go home early today and he couldn't even get up to our house because there were guys there with their big trucks taking down MORE trees!!! Joe about threw a fit. He was almost in tears telling me about it, because he was so mad. We understand that the trees cannot be causing problems for our electricity (& others nearby), but our poor trees! Apparently they said there can't be trees within 15 feet of either side of the power lines. That's a lot! (we have a VERY long driveway leading up to our house, and the power lines run along the whole length of our driveway on one side, so that's a lot of trees!) So I'm not looking forward to seeing it when I get home tonight. You use to not be able to see our house from the road, and now Joe said you can see straight up all the way up our driveway and the house no problem. (We liked being hidden! lol) *sigh* What a bummer. Joe called the electric company, and the guy said, "really it's our fault because we let you get used to having all those trees." Gee, thanks :P

We got him!

The mouse is gone! We set the regular snap traps last night right before bed, and before we even got in bed we heard the SNAP! Mouse gone.

Catching Up

Wow, I really fell behind in posting on my blog! Here are some snippets of things that have been going on:

- Monday & Tuesday I was off work, and had every intention of cleaning/organizing the basement while the boys were at daycare. I did get a good start, but still have a ways to go! However I did take time to go through about 4 or 5 rubbermaid tubs of baby clothes, and get them all separated out into specific sizes. I pulled out all the 12-18 mos clothes & washed them & put them in Adam's dresser since he's wearing 12 mos now. Then I labeled the tubs and put them neatly on a shelf in the basement. So now there's a 24 mos/2T tub, a 3T tub, and a 4T tub. As he grows into those I can just grab the tub & wash them & he'll be all set. I also was able to list several auctions on ebay of clothes he's outgrown, and set aside others for an upcoming yard sale. So, I didn't get what I intended to do done, but I was productive!

- Monday morning Joe left for a week of work near Nebraska. He's been gone all week, so I've been playing the part of a single mom. It's actually not been bad this time. He'll be back tonight, time flew by really fast while he was gone.

- We have a mouse! Ugh! So, the day before yesterday I bought mouse traps. I tried to use the kind that is a plastic box with a one-way door, and put a cracker with peanut butter at the far end of the box...in theory the mouse goes in to get the cracker, and then can't get out because the door doesn't swing out. Good theory, but this little sucker was too smart for that. When I got up yesterday morning & looked to see if it caught him, the trap was moved, cracker was gone and the box was on it's side with the door wide open! So, he had gone in, briefly got caught, but figured out how to flip the box on it's side so that he could get out the door. As I was examining this, I looked over and there he was just sitting there looking at me, like "na na na na boo boo!" LOL! Then he took off and I haven't seen him since! So much for trying to use a humane trap, now we're gonna set the kind that will snap him.

- On a sad note, I also found out that my mom's MS is getting worse. She was diagnosed with MS about 13 or so years ago, and has been lucky that it has been pretty mild. However, this past year things have been getting worse. Here's a blurb from an email I got from mom:
["Today I saw my neurologist, who said I'm now classified in the next level, the "secondary progressive" one, which basically means that it's getting worse, which I already knew. She's increasing a couple of my medicines, and adding a couple more, in hopes of slowing down its progress. One of those 2 new medicines has an increased chance of damaging my liver, so I have to get blood drawn once a month and see her every couple of months. Also, as long as I'm on it, I can't have any alcohol, not even wine. I'm also going to have another MRI, and see a physical therapist, who can show me some things I can do to make things easier to accomplish, hopefully saving a bit of energy."]

I feel helpless, as there's nothing I or anyone can really do to stop this from happening. It's sad to think of your mother deteriorating. I hope she doesn't get too much worse too quickly!

- My Box Project family that I sponsor lives in Mississippi, so I've been worried about them with Hurricane Katrina! I still haven't heard directly from them, but I heard from someone else that the town they live in was not hit too hard...they just had power outages and some tree limbs down. I'm still anxious to hear from them though, just to be sure!

Well, those are the main things that have gone on while I wasn't updating my blog recently!

Our family weekend!

This past weekend we decided last minute to take a family weekend down to the Black River (our favorite!). We had a good time overall. There were some fussy times in the evenings with Adam, but otherwise we had a good time. Normally we would camp in a tent, but with a 10-month-old baby along we decided that wouldn't be a good idea. So, we stayed in a one-room log cabin at one of the campgrounds that we haven't ever stayed at before. It was a nice, quiet campground (although not a river front one). Turns out we were the ONLY people there in the whole campground that weekend! It is one that was just renovated & reopened this year, so I guess not a lot of people know about it?

Anyway, Friday night we got there around 7pm and basically just unloaded our stuff and hung out around the cabin & campground. The cabin was really hot at first, no ac, but we asked if we could borrow a fan and that made a world of difference. Joe put the fan in the window and it soon was tolerable, and even a little chilly in the mornings.

Saturday we went to Elephant Rocks, which Brendan thought was cool. We climbed around on the rocks, and then had a picnic lunch there. Adam happily rode in the baby backpack the whole time. Then we wanted to play in the river, but since our campground didn't have river access, we were trying to think of where we could get to the river without having to go to another campground, and we ended up just going to Johnson's Shut-Ins. We didn't want to take the boys in the actual shut-ins since there are some pretty strong fall flows on part of that, but we went in the water above the shut-ins where it is just basically still water, and played there. Adam did good in the baby float, he enjoyed floating in the water. Then we went a little closer to the shut-ins, and there were some smaller "shut-ins" that were very shallow and not dangerous...like a shut-ins area for preschoolers! haha! So we played there for awhile. Brendan had a blast. Then we drove a little ways and found a place by the river to play, but shortly after we got there, Brendan said he needed to go potty, so we drove back to our campground. That evening we roasted hotdogs on the campfire, followed by smores, and played on the playground, ran around a little racing back to the cabin from the bathroom, playing "tig and tag" (that's what Brendan calls it), and a game of "I Spy" (Brendan's favorite thing to play right now). Then we all slept good that night, even Adam!

Sunday morning we packed up, and then went back to Johnson's Shut-Ins. This time we walked part-way on the walking trail throug the woods, and came to a really pretty spot along the river where noone else was. We knew that was just the type of setting we were looking for. So we baptized Adam there, just like we did Brendan when he was a baby. We took some pictures...I hope they turn out, because it was a really nice, pretty spot!

So, anyway, that was our weekend. It was a lot more hectic with a baby & a 4 yr old than the old days of camping (& floating) by ourselves with friends, but it was still a nice change of scenery and good to get out as a family to do something fun together.

Reaching Goals!

Here's an update on how I'm doing on the little goals I set a week or so ago:

1. Stop drinking soda: TODAY IS DAY 2 IN A ROW W/ NO SODA

2. Drink 7 glasses of water a day: YES!

3. Plan & eat healthier dinners to include more salmon, chicken, turkey, & veggies/fruits: PLANNED WITH BEST OF INTENTIONS

4. Continue to replace snacky food with fruits/veggies while at work:
YES! I'VE BEEN DOING GREAT W/ THIS MOST DAYS!

5. Make & drink ice tea (& green tea) w/ Splenda instead of sugary drinks & soda:
YES! I HAVE A PITCHER OF TEA MADE WITH SPLENDA IN THE FRIDGE AT WORK & I'VE BEEN DRINKING IT INSTEAD OF SODA

6. Remember to take multi-vitamin every night:
YES, WITH AN OCCASSIONAL MISS

7. Continue to exercise every week day morning (like I have been for the last few months):
YES!

8. Re-write & follow FLY routines (morning & before bed routines & basic weekly plan):
YES!

9. Work on my patience with Brendan, Adam, & Joe!:
YES! I'VE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER THIS PAST WEEK!

And also, Brendan is doing great too! We've been working with him for a month or so to take on more responsibility. (he's 4-1/2) His "jobs" are to make his bed & feed the cat(s) in the morning, and put his plate in the dishwasher after dinner. He's been doing great! He complained a lot every morning at first about his bed, and kept saying he couldn't do it and he didn't know how to make his bed (even though we both showed & helped him many times). But now he does it without complaining, and he's proud of himself when he can come tell us he made his bed (and of course we give him LOTS of praise). He even puts his jungle pillows on the bed to finish it off! (he has a jungle-themed room) No, a bed made by a 4 yr old doesn't look perfect, but that's, of course, not the point. He likes to feed the cat(s), so that one hasn't been a problem at all. And I do still have to remind him about his dinner plate sometimes, but he does it right away when I remind him.

(BTW, the reason I write "cat(s)" is because we don't know if we have 1 or 2 right now. We *had* 2, but they are outdoor cats (due to Adam being allergic to them) and 1 of our cats has disappeared. She eventually showed up with dried blood on her nose & mouth, but then was gone again. For several weeks after that she would show up about once a week. Now, she's been gone again for several weeks, so we think she may have died. But we thought that last time too, so who knows).

Who knew my boy's room could look so GOOD!

Wow, I feel great! Tuesday morning I woke up at my usual 5:00am to exercise, but I had a terrible headache, and my left ear & left side of my throat hurt, so I climbed back in bed. Slept for another hour, got up with the intention of getting ready for work, but still felt terrible. So, I called in sick and Joe took the boys to daycare on his way to work. I got back in bed and slept for 2-1/2 more hours and woke up feeling fine! However, coincidentally, my keys had been left in my office Monday (Joe & I had carpooled in his car & I walked off w/o my keys!) so I couldn't go into work even if I wanted to at that point. So, I decided to take care of Brendan's room as best as I could while he was gone! (since that is one of my big stressors!)

Oh my, it took forever, (6 hours!) but it looks GREAT! I got rid of so much junk!

I filled a 30-gallon trash bag to throw away, a whole box full of little happy-meal-type toys ready to donate to daycare's treasure box they have, a big laundry basket of stuff to put in the yard sale, and another small box of stuff to put in the basement for Adam when he gets a little older.

The only things he has in his room now are the things he actually plays with:
-Games (neatly stacked on shelves in closet)
-Puzzles (neatly stacked on shelves)
-Action figures (all together in a plastic storage basket on shelf)
-Little plastic animals & dinosaurs (all together in a small plastic storage box w/ clear lid on shelf)
-blocks/legos (on shelf)
-books (on book shelves)
-movies (on shelves)
-V-smile machine w/ game cartridges (near tv)
-desk stuff in the desk (paper, crayons, etc)
-trucks neatly displayed on set of shelves (Joe's dad is always buying him trucks and so proud of it, so I felt like I had to keep those).
-Clothes in closet & dresser.
-and ONE other plastic container of a FEW miscellaneous boy toys that he plays with (flashlight, laser tag type thingy, etc) which is neatly placed under a set of shelving.

If it didn't fit in one of those catagories/places, then out it went! Now everything has a place and his room looks SO much better!!! He was so excited when he got home & saw it. His eyes lit up and he said "Thank you Mommy for my new room!" LOL He didn't even notice that 1/2 of his stuff was gone! heehee And he put everything he played with away before bed the last 2 nights. WOOHOO!!! I can't say enough how much better I feel every time I look at his room now. What a weight off my shoulders, and a great feeling to have accomplished something.

Now...if I can do that to the BASEMENT too I think I will explode with excitement! lol

I did it!

I made it through the weekend without any meltdowns! Woohoo! LOL

Friday evening, some people came to pick up our old bed. We actually ended up talking with them for quite awhile! It was the aunt (& uncle?) of the person that claimed the bed from us on freecycle. Then I got a very sweet email from the lady herself later, thanking us for the bed and how very much she appreciated & needed it, and she was so pleased with what good condition it was in. That was so great! It really does feel good to help someone out, while getting bulky stuff out of our house at the same time! So, 3 families now have "new" beds, and none of us paid a cent for them! This family got our bed, we got the queen bed from friends at Joe's work, and that was because they got a free bed from someone else who bought a new set. That is just really neat.

Saturday morning Joe went to help someone on a project related to work, and I stayed home with the boys (who were both up at 5:30am!). Brendan likes to watch Saturday morning cartoons, so he watched those & Adam played next to Brendan. They were both so good! I actually managed to do about 5 loads of laundry, empty & reload the dishwasher, and some other things too before Joe got back around 11:30am. Adam did not take a nap, but he was okay anyway. After Joe got home, I cleared out part of Brendan's room to make way for the new desk. The desk arrived on Friday! We weren't expecting it until this coming Wednesday at the earliest, so that was a pleasant surprise. Joe put it all together & it looks great! We forgot to get a desk chair to go with it, oops! But Brendan pulled up his little rocking chair and colored, drew pictures, looked at books, etc at his new desk. I think it will be a great one for several years. It can hold a computer/monitor too, so when he gets older if he has a computer, we will already have a place for it! And right now he is just so into drawing & coloring, that he can use it now...then when he starts school he can use it for homework, etc. Even as much trouble as Joe gave me for spending "unnecessary" money on it & the bill payer's desk we got for the living room, I think he really has to admit they were both good purchases now. And in my opinion they were both VERY affordable compared to many I've seen! The bill payer's desk was only $88 from JCPenney.com (most others I've seen are around $200!) The desk for Brendan is a desktop with a cabinet door, a hutch type thing on top with shelf & another cabinet door, and it came with what they call a printer stand, but looks like a small bookshelf and can be used for other things. The entire set was only $44 at Wal-Mart.com!!!

The rest of Saturday I finished up laundry and cleared out our full-size sheets out of the linen closet, since we have a queen bed now, and played with the boys. We were going to watch one of our Blockbuster.com movies Saturday night, but the movie "Any Given Sunday" was on tv and we ended up watching that instead.

Sunday Joe slept in while I got up with the boys. Once Joe got up I decided it was necessary for me to go get groceries. We were out of all the basics, and I knew that we wouldn't have anything for breakfast or to make for our lunches for Monday, so I ventured out to Super Wal-Mart. UGH!!! I HATE Super Wal-mart on a weekend! I usually avoid it if at all possible. But I survived. I was a little frazzled after that, as crowds annoy me, but I calmed myself down on the drive home. lol Later my dad & his wife stopped by for a quick visit. They were headed home from an out-of-town massage class (they are both certified massage therapists) and decided to stop in and see us & the boys. That was nice. I feel like it's been a really long time since I've seen them. They were impressed with how much more advanced Adam is since the last time they saw him. And Brendan was glad to show off his new desk too. So, we had a nice little visit with them. Once again Joe & I had planned to watch one of our movies, but Sunday is a good tv night, so we watched Extreme Makeover Home Edition and My Kind of Town instead.

There was one moment where I almost started yelling excessively in frustration when I discovered Brendan had completely messed up his room after I spent so long on it again, but instead, I sternly got after him and gave him a warning that if he can't keep his toys picked up then we're going to start getting rid of them. And that was it. I *will* follow through with that too. He has way too many toys, and if I declutter them it will really be doing him (and us) a favor anyway, and will certainly be easier to keep picked up.

Most importantly, I was feeling & acting pretty normal all weekend! No arguments, no feeling sad or mad, no excessive yelling, and no meltdowns ;) I felt like me again :) I felt like I accomplished some things...nothing major, but seeing a small difference in Brendan's room and having an empty space in the linen closet did wonders for my outlook! And I have been following my FLYlady routines for the most part too. Just wait until I get Brendan's room finished, and all the stuff decluttered out of the basement...I'll be soaring then!

random thoughts from this week

Last night we slept in our new Queen-sized bed for the first time. Well, it's not a "new" bed, but new to us. Some friends Joe works with gave it to us. Joe had a heck of a time w/ his allergies last night though. We don't have a frame yet, so right now we just have the boxsprings & mattress on the floor. Personally, I don't feel like it's much bigger than our full size bed was. I thought it would be quite a bit bigger. It also wasn't very comfortable in my opinion, but Joe thought it was fine. So, offered up our full-size mattress, boxsprings, & frame on freecycle and it was claimed within 5 minutes! Someone is coming to pick it all up tonight. That's great, because now we don't have to worry about it being in our way or where to store it. Freecycle is such a great thing. Now someone else can get use out of it!

We haven't made any real plans for the weekend yet. There is an outdoor showing of the Sponge Bob movie in the park on a huge inflatable movie screen on Saturday, but I don't know if we'll attempt that or not. Brendan would love it, I'm sure, but not sure how Adam would behave. And as always, I have hopes of getting some decluttering done around the house, and maybe Brendan's room cleaned up again & organized! I ordered a desk for him that should be coming in next week, so I probably should make cleaning/decluttering his room the priority for this weekend. I'm sure Joe has things he wants to get done this weekend too though.

I *think* I've been having a better attitude again Wed, Thurs, & today. The weekends are usually the TRUE test of how I'm doing though! LOL Let's see if I can make it through this weekend without a meltdown.

This week at work was the annual Summer Dance Camp that I started up 7 years ago. It went pretty well again this year. They had their final performance today for the parents. I always love to watch the parents look so happy as they watch their children perform. I always hear so many compliments about the camp every year, and the kids really do seem to have fun. The instructors are great, and the little routines they come up with are adorable. I had all the participants sign cards to give to the instructors. Then at the end of the performance I gave them the cards & a long-stem rose each, and gave all the kids a "goodie bag". Several parents commented to me that that was so thoughtful of me to think to do that. That made me feel good. I do that every year, but these were people who were participating for the first time this year. Dance camp, and the Father-Daughter Dance I put on in June, are probably my two favorite things of the whole year. These are both programs that I started myself, so I guess I'm a little biased. LOL But, anyway, it was fun watching them perform today....it's always a nice change from my usual days spent in my office.

Well, it's about time to leave work & head home, so I better end this and get a move on. Here's hoping for a fabulous, stress-free, positive weekend!

Backwards slide

Whoa! Okay, so trying to force myself to be happy & positive didn't exactly work for long. I had a big backslide over the weekend, Monday, & Tuesday. I think my hormones are still screwed up from having a baby, and it makes things seem like such a big deal. I'm torn with what to do, because on one hand I think I should be communicating my feelings and things that I'm not happy about to Joe (isn't communication important?), but on the other hand, it makes him feel like he's in the "hot seat" when I mention things and that makes him feel worse. We had a pretty in depth talk last night, and tried to find what each other thought the problems were. He is so hung up on the money issue he can't even answer any of my questions without it being an answer about money. We don't have a lot of debt, there's about $3,000 on our credit card right now. Yes, I agree that we of course need to pay it, and yes it is important to make smart spending choices. But it absolutely consumes him. He doesn't want me or us to do anything until it is paid, and then he doesn't want us to do anything until we save up for the addition, and then he doesn't want us to do anything until that is paid, and then he doesn't want us to do anything until we have a surplus. That's all well & good in an ideal situation, but we obviously have to buy groceries, gas, and household things, and then there's this thing called life! I don't believe in sitting around waiting for conditions to be perfect before doing anything. I have faith that everything will work out, and it always has. We usually pay off the credit card every month, we just got behind a little over the last 6 months after the unpaid part of my maternity leave. Even when we didn't have any credit card debt, Joe was still the same, saying we shouldn't go on vacation and we shouldn't spend money on anything. It's a no-win situation. So even after the debt is paid, it's not like his money anxieties will disappear. We *are* paying off the $3,000 and to me I don't see the point in letting it consume our every thought & action in the meantime. Especially when I have so many other things that are stressing me out already.

But anyway, we also talked about how neither of us feel like we have any time to get things done around the house, and how sometimes I need help but that takes time away from when he wants to be getting work done outside, etc. And I tried to let him know that a lot of my anxiety comes from me being frustrated with myself about losing the last of the baby weight, and never having time to declutter the basement, and trying to keep things clean only to have them messed up again right away, not having enough me time, not enough sleep and juggling the kids and their needs along with my own. I also told him that it hurts my feelings when he doesn't take the time & effort to remember me on birthdays, Valentine's, and holidays, etc. He usually doesn't even get me a card or anything, sometimes he'll say he owes me a dinner out or something, but it never happens. It's not that I want expensive gifts or anything like that, I just wish he could do something to show me he cares & thinks about me. It's like a slap in the face to not have Valentine's & my birthday celebrated or acknowledged. That was the one issue that he totally agreed with my point, and he apologized and said he is usually just disorganized and doesn't think ahead about things like that.

He also pointed out that he wanted to go back to working at Domino's some evenings/weekends, because that is his way of contributing a little extra to the debt, and makes him feel like he's working towards it. That's fine. I just wanted him to help more with the boys in the evening and not be gone EVERY evening, but a couple times a week is fine. Adam is finally getting a little more independent, so it should be getting easier. It was just so hard when he had to be tended to every waking moment, in addition to Brendan needing things, dinner, baths, feedings, etc. Now he can play more, crawl around, and sometimes even watch Baby Einstein videos! So things are becoming easier in the evenings, and I won't be needing an extra set of hands as much.

There was a lot more discussing and things we talked about, but this is getting too long! The important thing is, that we both agreed to try harder to not be so critical of each other and to bear with each other. And we are going to try to do more things as a couple again too. We are establishing a once-a-month date night starting in September. And Joe himself even said that we need a vacation- just the two of us. I agree! Not a big vacation, but maybe we can get the grandparents to watch the boys for a couple days and we go camping and on a float trip. We use to do that all the time, it's our favorite thing to do together. So, I think things will be fine. (And hopefully my hormones will straighten back out too, so that things don't seem like such a big deal to me).

As for my list of goals from last week...ha! Not doing so well on those either!

1. Stop drinking soda (not yet...still having 1 a day)
2. Drink 7 glasses of water a day (no, usually around 5-6 glasses)
3. Plan & eat healthier dinners to include more salmon, chicken, turkey, & veggies/fruits
(not yet)

Happiness Goals!

"A woman is about as happy as she makes up her mind to be."

Got an email from my friend who sells Mary Kay, and this quote was at the bottom of the ad in the email. Pretty good timing for that quote to be delivered to me, since this is the exact concept I've been working on. Overall I've been feeling much better. Yesterday I had a little backslide and felt irritable & cranky, and today I feel so tired, but most days these last couple weeks have been good.

My weekend away with my sister & mom last weekend was good. We talked a lot, ate a lot, and worked on our scrapbooks. It was a nice little break from reality. I only finished 18 pages.

This weekend I once again hope to get some decluttering done. But if it doesn't work out & I don't have time, I'm going to try not to get upset. I hope to re-write my FLYlady routines, and work on menu planning too. I want some more healthy meals to make. I've been doing really well these last 3 days eating more healthy than I have been. Lots of fruit & veggies throughout the day at work instead of snack food, but I need more ideas for dinners. I would like to cut out soda completely, but I still seem to end up having 1 a day. There was a period of 2 years back in high school that I did not drink a single soda! But ever since college I have become addicted. Was a Mountain Dew addiction for many years, then I tried to go to diet & Diet Dr Pepper was the only diet soda I could stand, so that became my addiction. But I now have a new addiction: Sugar-Free Red Bull! I drink one every morning on my way to work. Sometimes I'll have 1 more in the afternoon at work in place of when I use to drink a soda. But, I haven't cut the soda out completely, as the last 2 days I've had a Mountain Dew w/ dinner. I need to just make up a pitcher of ice tea w/ Splenda instead of sugar & drink on that instead, but I keep forgetting!

Oh well, lots of little goals to work on I guess. At least the exercising is a habit. I get up around 5am every week day morning still to do my exercise. Now if I can get the better eating habits down as a habit too the rest of the baby fat should melt right off, right?! That would make me SOOO happy! Joe keeps insisting that I'm not fat and that I look good now. I hope he really thinks that. But even so, I need to lose at least 15 lbs before I will feel comfortable w/ myself again. Really I'd like to lose 30 more lbs, but I'll take 15. I think I could fit back in my size 8 clothes if I lost the 15 lbs or so.

Okay, I guess I just need to write down my little goals so I can be constantly reminded & brainwashed. heehee. So, let's see...I'll write some goals below & see how I do & update my blog as to whether I actually follow these!

1. Stop drinking soda
2. Drink 7 glasses of water a day
3. Plan & eat healthier dinners to include more salmon, chicken, turkey, & veggies/fruits
4. Continue to replace snacky food with fruits/veggies while at work (today is day 3 of doing this!)
5. Make & drink ice tea (& green tea) w/ Splenda instead of sugary drinks & soda.
6. Remember to take multi-vitamin every night
7. Continue to exercise every week day morning (like I have been for the last few months)
8. Re-write & follow FLY routines (morning & before bed routines & basic weekly plan)
9. Work on my patience with Brendan, Adam, & Joe!

Okay, now lets see if I can work on these & be successful!

I'm determined to change things for the sake of my happiness! I WILL be a happy person again. I will change the things that I can, and not stress about the things I can't change. The things I'm not happy with that I can't change, I'll just have to change my attitude about. That reminds me of another favorite quote I need to remember:
"Life is 10% what you make it, and 90% how you take it."

And then there's a line out of the song "Something More" by Sugarland that goes...
"Some believe in destiny and some believe in fate. But I believe that happiness is something we create."
